The /g/ sound is spelt in three ways:
dg as in bridge, wedge, hedge, lodge, badge
ge as in cage, page, sage, engine, engage, change, manage, village, charge.
g as in gem, gist, gym, giant giraffe, gigantic, general, gentle, energy.
Exception: give
[Note that the above dg sounds are the same as j sound as in jar, joke, job, etc.]
Spelling g where g comes before any other letter.
Examples/Word List
Say the following words: gum, get, game, gate, goat, glass, gutter, gather, drag, dragon.
Say the following words and note the sound you hear. If you hear j, select j; if you hear g, select g.
